Their bold new cover version of Billie Eilish’s modern classic “Billie Bossa Nova” takes the song for a dance in Sugarcane’s uniquely mellow sound universe, with Brazilian percussion, Trinidadian steel pan, and an unapologetic English accent. It’s the perfect soundtrack to the summer.
Sugarcane’s hybrid sound updates vintage samba and calypso for twenty-first century London. With one British parent and one from the Caribbean, it's not surprising Robin's music is a post-Colonial jumble. Acoustic backyard sambas meet French chansons. Bahian drumming melds with West Indian steel pan, an old drum machine, and a toy melodica.
