The imaginary town of Pinesville, 1970s.
A young boy witnesses the mayor having sex in the woods with a girl with a learning disorder who is considered ‘different’ by the townspeople.
Many adults sexually abuse her, taking advantage of her disability, until the day she becomes pregnant by the mayor.
A sanctimonious priest, who sees sin everywhere, is secretly attracted by the girl, considering her a gift from the Lord and obsessively idealizing her.
The priest starts to accuse various people, one after the other, instigating unrest verging on racism.
The girl tells her story, bringing to light a great secret about her life. When the priest discovers the truth about the girl he had idealized, he becomes convinced she has evil within her, and that it was the evil inside her that attracted and corrupted the others.
He decides to carry out a massacre during the town festival, poisoning the revellers with wine, thinking them all involved in some way in the girl’s story.
