Spike is the synth-pop project of Hannah McLoughlin. Released on Gob Nation Records (The Tubs, Sniffany & The Nits, PC World), Spike’s debut EP builds on a tradition of idiosyncratic British synth-pop, bringing to mind the cold-yet-intimate work of Rose McDowell and Roger Doyle. McLoughlin is a regular performer at London’s legendary experimental venue Cafe Oto, shapeshifting between dungeon synth, left field trad folk and film scoring. Collaborating with Owen Williams (vocalist and guitarist of The Tubs), Spike sees McLoughlin fully embrace her talent for pop songcraft. The E.P begins with a brooding, entirely re-worked take on Warren Zevon’s classic ‘Werewolves of London’ which teases out an unexpected melancholy from the song. Set in a Parisian hotel, ‘Tiquetonne’ interposes ‘Con Te Partiro’ into a manic ode to insomnia reminiscent of the synth aggression of The Serfs. ‘You’re Missing’ and ‘Voca Me’ combine earworm hooks with the cold clarity of McLoughlin’s vocal tone, bringing to mind Broadcast’s Trish Keenan. The record closes with the Laurie Anderson-esque vocoder ballad I Could Wait - a yearning, oblique coda.

The video for ‘Werewolves of London’ was shot by McLoughlin on 16mm film and tracks many of the Soho landmarks referenced in Zevon’s lyrics.
