Lisa Gerrard and Mark St.John Ellis worked together via long distance communication between Australia and Ireland on the second version of The Empty Vessel which came out of a series of pieces Mark St.John was working on, experimenting with bowl sounds and his voice. They have both known each other since he was part of her first solo album tour. Lisa's creative technician in Australia, Simon Bowley did the mixes on Lisa's voice with effects on the bowls and sample, Martin Quinn in Ireland the mastering and the creative director and sound design arranger was Mark St.John Ellis.

The project Elijah's Mantle recorded the first two albums in the Dead Can Dance studio. Mark St.John continued the association after touring with Lisa Gerrard by releasing the compilation 'These Wings Without Feathers' on the record label DeNovaDaCapo he founded featuring previously unreleased pieces by Lisa and then collaborated on The Empty Vessel Project.
