From composer Tom Figgins:

"One of the major aspects driving my initial thoughts was the binaural possibilities and expanding the solo experience, pushing the sound effects, creating space, environments and doubling down on the mood. Mixing this in Dolby Atmos allowed for us to physically move some of the sounds in the audio space to give them more intrigue.

Quite early in the process the nylon string guitar began to be the “voice” of the rangers and in my early discussions with Andrew this was an instrument and flavour that was ever present in his initial thinking so, it seemed like a no-brainer. Merging that with the cinematic style that I consider to be my own is how we got to where we are now.

I knew I wanted each path type to have its own feel and it was imperative to find a way to make them all feel like they were part of the same world - part of the Valley! Andrew and I discussed how Prokofiev wrote Peter and the Wolf and that became a touchstone across the entirety of the project, leaning on the stylings of that for giving places sounds or emotion through music. Take the mountains for example; I knew I wanted the mountain path to feel lonely and isolating, so I decided to have 4 guitars (representing the 4 players) playing together and little else. I’d even named the individual guitar parts as the different roles to really ensure that they were fulfilling what I deemed to be each individual role. The conciliator was doing the hard work in the bass keeping everything in check and the shaper danced with the flourishes on top. But together they created a feel of togetherness in isolation and really pushed at what I was wanting the Mountains to feel like: a lonely hike shared with friends with the potential of danger round the corner.

I also got a chance to work with some fantastic live musicians - we spent a few days recording strings in London with Tom Hobden and Ian Burdge. We had little time to relax as we got so much done in the few days we had and there was amazing playing and work done by all to get everything achieved in the weekend we had. My good friend Gary played some percussion on the album. Including instruments like congas, shaker, wood blocks, clave and toms to name a few. And all the guitars were played by me on my trusty Picado 49 at my studio in Yorkshire.

It's been an absolutely wonderful experience diving into the world of Earthborne Rangers and tapping into the already rich and colorful lore. I’ve always maintained that the secret to anything being good is if it has heart and that made working on this project a joy, because this game has it in spades. It really is in every nook and cranny. From the depth of the mechanics to the art style it had me from the get go and I’m very excited to now be sharing the soundtrack with you."
